It takes an inordinate amount of blood, sweat, and tears to achieve what may be called ‘physical fitness’. And by physical fitness, I don’t mean that you just have to look slim. A physically fit person’s body systems and organs work efficiently so that the person can perform the daily activities with the least effort possible.
Remember our school days, when we would eagerly wait for the games period so that we could get to escape from the mundane classes and play our favorite games/sports with our pals? Those were the days when we would put in unconscious efforts to stay in shape. But, as time passed by, we grew up and let social media be the be-all and end-all of our existence, thereby completely ignoring the physical activities that are important for us to stay healthy.
Lifestyle diseases are on the rise, thanks to our complete ignorance of the physical activities. We’ve just become too lazy to incorporate physical activities into our routine. Is it too hard to spare 1 hour out of 24 hours in a day to give your body the treatment it deserves? No. Self-care should be a priority, a necessity, something that you shouldn’t be deprived of.
Everyone may not have the luxury to go, hit the gym every day. Nonetheless, you could resort to the other simple ways of staying fit. In this article, I am going to walk you through some of the tried and tested ways of enhancing physical as well as mental well-being. Let’s get started.
1.) Always prefer taking the stairs: Let’s face it. We have become too lazy and impatient to climb the stairs. So, we choose an easier option: using an escalator. Climbing up and down the stairs burns more than twice the number of calories as using an escalator. Also, if you want to work your heart and lungs, what can be better than climbing the stairs? If you do it regularly, you will realize that you do not get breathless, as you did initially.
2.) Take a balanced diet and eliminate unhealthy choices: We were probably in the 4th or 5th grade when we were first introduced to the term ‘balanced diet.’ But, what we do even as grown-ups is, savor junk food because it appetizes our taste buds and boosts our feel-good hormones. If you truly want to stick to a fitness regime, doing physical exercise solely won’t help. Taking the utmost care of your diet is just as important. Fruits and veggies, such as bananas, apples, oranges, broccoli, spinach, carrots, etc. should be an important part of your diet. At the same time, try and completely cut down on the intake of sugary foods and processed foods.
3.) Run/ jog/ brisk walk daily: Needless to say, running offers the same benefits as climbing the stairs does. If you don’t have time to specially go for a run or a jog, you could run your errands by brisk walking to the grocery store, instead of opting for home deliveries.
4.) Meditate daily: While it’s important to stay physically healthy, it’s just as important to stay mentally healthy to achieve overall fitness levels because stress affects our bodies in unimaginable ways. To calm down our constantly restless and overworked minds, it’s imperative to spare 15-20 minutes of your day on meditation. During those 15-20 minutes, block out all the other thoughts from your awareness, and focus completely on either your breath or any other object/sounds in your surroundings.
THE TAKEAWAY What medicines can’t do to your body, physical fitness can. To religiously follow a fitness schedule every day, may not seem easy at the beginning. But, what if you were asked to start small, take one step at a time, and eventually graduate to performing high-intensity workouts? Savoring junk food, living an unhealthy lifestyle, is a sure-shot recipe for disaster. What’s worse is letting all the fat accumulate in your body and not working out.
In this COVID-struck world where we need to take care of our health the most, we ought to shift our focus from all the unnecessary activities to our health because health truly is wealth. Our physical movement has been restricted during these unprecedented times, which makes it all the more important to indulge in physical activities within the safe space of our houses, in every way possible. Even after things return to a semblance of normalcy, we should continue working on our physical fitness.

My husband likes to smoke ribs and always does a bunch at a time. I cut them into 2-3 servings and place in vacuum seal bags to freeze. When we want ribs in the middle of winter, I pull out a bag or two , put a cup of water in my IP and set for 6 minutes. Not only does the pot thaw them nicely, the vacuum seal bag keeps them moist while the pressure of the steam in the pot seems to drive that smoky and marinade flavor further into the meat. We also buy frozen tamales from a local restaurant by the dozen. The IP is perfect to cook them straight from frozen in a steamer basket. Issi Arman Fritzie
