I have encountered many people who complain that they can’t develop the habit of reading or are inconsistent with reading.
Reading is one goal that many people set for themselves but fail miserably.
There is no doubt that reading is one of the best habits that one should cultivate. The benefits of reading are unparalleled.
In this article, I have mentioned the best possible ways to curate the habit of reading.
Attitude- To begin with, never ever take reading as a burden. Realize that reading is very relishing. If you go into reading for the sake of it, there are slender chances you’ll like it.
Don’t go into reading with a preconceived negative notion. Ramp up your excitement before you start a book.
Choice- If you are a beginner in reading, choose the book from a genre that you like. Your preference for the genre is going to be similar to that of movies. You can also go for short stories. If you are a beginner then I would recommend you start with Agatha Christie books or stories from Ruskin Bond. These books are subtle and interesting. They’ll help you keep engrossed and will set a perfect way to kickstart your reading journey. I have provided the links to books I would recommend for beginners at the end of this article.
Also, stash at least 3-4 books with you. If sometimes you don’t feel like reading a particular book, you can go on to another one.
Target- Now that you have a book. Set a target for yourself- like, reading 60 pages every day. Achieve the target, no matter what.
You can also create a reward after you have achieved your daily targets. If you want to watch the TV, then first read 20 pages and then go for watching TV. This will also enhance your chances of not watching TV.
You should also set monthly targets for reading at least 2-3 books.
Time- Many people complain that they lack time to read. But the fact is that they lack intent and are poor at time management. You need to set your priorities right. You can read when you are commuting. Eliminate the time you waste on unproductive stuff that leads you to mediocrity.
A piece of golden advice to you is that you read first thing in the morning. When you wake up in the morning, your energy is at its peak. You can concentrate really well in the morning.
A productive hack that I’ll like you to be enlightened with is that switch your internet usage with reading. Replace your time checking social media or surfing YouTube with reading.
Set a reading schedule. Stick to it, no matter what.
Also, the best way to end your day is with reading. Your mind needs to spend time away from the screen so that you sleep faster and better.
Environment- Whenever you are reading, keep your phone out of your reach. In fact, keep all possible distractions away. Sit alone in a room, with a dictionary along. You are bound to face new words. Instead of using your phone, use a dictionary. When you use your phone, most probably you’ll end up mindlessly scrolling through other stuff on your phone. You’ll choose instant gratification over the book. This is a common practice.
Keep your book next to your bed, so that when you wake up and see the book, you are reminded that you have to read.
Carry your book along with you, this will aid you to read whenever you fetch some time.
Remember, it is the little things that make a huge difference.
Friend circle- Your friend circle plays a very crucial role in your growth. If your friend circle doesn’t discuss ideas, growth, books and instead focuses on movies, series, then it’s high time that you reconsidered your friend circle. Upgrade your friend circle. Find friends who are into reading. Exchange your views on books with them and you’ll end up feeling good.
Discuss the story with your family. The more you share it with people, the more content you’ll become.
